GDOT Engineering Services for Cable-Stayed Bridges (2011 – 2022)

Our team member experience includes providing engineering services for the Sidney Lanier and Talmadge Memorial cable-stayed bridges for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) on a task order basis through two consecutive contracts while employed with three separate firms.

Over this nine year period, a variety of inspections have been performed, including in-depth inspections of the Sidney Lanier (2011) and Talmadge Memorial (2011 & 2020), routine inspection of the Talmadge Memorial (2017), special member inspections of the Sidney Lanier to evaluate damage to stay cables resulting from excessive cable vibration (2014 & 2016), and an emergency post-Hurricane Irma inspection of the Talmadge Memorial (2017).

Our firm houses the engineer-of-record for multiple rehabilitation efforts which arose from the various bridge inspections since 2011. A maintenance repair contract was performed on the Talmadge Memorial in 2014 to address deterioration noted during the 2011 in-depth inspection. Work primarily consisted of addressing defects associated with excessive stay-cable vibrations. Multiple additional rehabilitation projects are currently underway, including maintenance repairs to various stay-cables on the Sidney Lanier and installation of retrofit external dampers for the 320 stays found at both structures. The Talmadge Memorial has two 480-ft tall towers supporting the three cable-stayed main unit totaling 2040-ft. The entire structure is 7565-ft long and provides 185-ft of clearance for ocean going vessels accessing the Port of Savannah. The Sidney Lanier consists of a two-pylon cable-stayed structure supporting a main river span and two back spans (total length of 2,500 feet) with a post-tensioned concrete deck supported by concrete edge girders and post-tensioned concrete floorbeams. Thirty-four approach spans consist of ten prestressed or post-tensioned concrete beams for a total bridge length of 7,780 feet.

Most recently, Strinteg served as a sub-consultant for the 2020 in-depth inspection of the Talmadge Memorial Bridge and 2022 inspection of the Sidney Lanier Bridge. Our engineers utilized rope access to assist with the hands-on inspection of deck and tower level anchorages and tower exterior surfaces for both cable-stayed bridges.
