Finite Element Analyses
Our engineers have performed a number of finite element analyses (FEA) to determine the cause and retrofits for complex problems found within bridges, primarily related to fatigue cracks, overstress, and localized advanced section loss. Our work has determined the remaining service life of several signature bridges and led to significant rehabilitation efforts throughout the United States. Each project begins with a detailed field inspection to identify accurate geometry, material properties, and boundary conditions (restraints/constraints). Three-dimensional FEA models are then created with special consideration to boundary conditions, accurate load path characteristics, and refined meshes within acceptable limits. Field load testing and diagnostic monitoring techniques are then utilized to calibrate FEA model results.
Our engineers have provided FEA services for a number of signature bridges, including:
- I-65 over the Tennessee River (Morgan County, AL)
- Hale Boggs Memorial Cable-Stayed Bridge (Luling, LA)
- Maurice J. Tobin Memorial Bridge (Boston, MA)
- Delta River Bridges (Mobile, AL)
- Waldrip Bridge (Coleman County, TX)
- New Hope-Lambertville Toll Bridge (New Hope, PA)
- Bridge No. 860541 (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
